Since I haven’t updated in a while, here is a list of what’s new:
Beat Mass Effect 1 & 2 with pure paragon. Need to do pure renegade.
I’m about 26 hours played in Final Fantasy XIII – currently loving every second of it.
BioShock 2 is in from Gamefly, I dive back into Rapture once I finish FFXIII
I finally purchased a small Warhammer 40k Army (Ultra Marines) and put them together. I still need to paint them.
Due to a crazy ass storm we were without power for roughly 12 hours and internet for about a day and a half. Not nearly as bad as others had it, still, iphone interwebs to the rescue!
We had one hell of a storm last night. Knocked out the power for 10 hours and we’re still waiting on the TV/Internet to come back. Thank God for the iPhone .
Linux can be used to do pretty much anything. It installs on almost any device, can be modified extensively, and the best part: it’s free. Even though users can think it’s difficult to use, there are plenty of guides and forums for help.
When I got the idea to make a Linux time machine/file server/Xbox 360 media server I was getting ready to back up my MacBook. I was setting up the cables for my external hard drive because time machine told me I didn’t backup in 40 days. I really wanted a time capsule, but I couldn’t afford the price. As the backup started I noticed my old PC sitting in the corner collecting dust. Thats when it hit me. Why not throw Linux on the PC and use it to backup to my external hard drives wirelessly?
With that, I went to Twitter, announcing the idea to everyone. A few coworkers replied with some extremely helpful links and encouragement. One coworker doubted it would work at all. Armed with some information and an ISO of Ubuntu Linux, I got started.
To be honest, I didn’t really discover anything on my own. I just followed the guides step by step and everything worked pretty smoothly. Below are the sites I used to get everything setup and working. I have to say, I even learned some things (linux commands/how to use terminal) in the process.
If you haven’t figured it out: These are pretty much guides on how to make a Linux machine work with Apple’s “Apple Talk” protocol and share files with Macs. Not PC
This is the guide I used the most. It pretty much explains how to get Apple Talk working on an Ubuntu Linux machine and how to set everything up for time machine. I also found the user comments pretty helpful when figuring out how to get some minor stuff working.
Getting uShare to work was really easy compared to the time machine backup. Just follow the steps in terminal and viola!
With following both of those guides and investing a little time I got it all to work and work well. My macs will automatically backup to my external hard drive over the network, I can share files from the server with macs and windows computers, and I can put movies on the linux server and watch them in HD on my Xbox 360. It’s really cool and wasn’t that hard to do (even for a complete Linux noob).
Post comments if you have any questions or feedback. Hope this helps .
One day I decided I wanted to play through Diablo 2, easy enough right? Well, not for anyone with a Mac with an intel x3100 chip (me). It seems that Apple dropped support for 256 colors and with that, Diablo 2. Currently there is a beta patch available from Blizzard that will run the game in single player mode (battle.net won’t run until the official patch). For those of you like me who want to play on battle.net and want to do it within OS X, there is hope! I actually found a workaround: Crossover Games (for OS X). I toiled around with it for a few hours and it does run the game well. Here is exactly how I did it:
Things you need (or at least I used to make it work):
Diablo 2 and Expansion installer (windows client) – available from battle.net direct download. As long as you have valid CD keys for both games, you can create an account with Blizzard and they’ll actually give you a download of the client and a new CD key that will work. Once again, you need the WINDOWS client, not the OS X.
NOTE: If you try to download this using OS X, it will, but as Blizzards proprietary torrent downloader *.exe file. This means you can’t just run it in OS X. I used VMware fusion and Ubuntu (with WINE) to download the files and move them over to the OS X side of my Mac (THANKS TO NATE). I’m sure you can just use boot camp and play on windows as well. I don’t own a copy of Windows, nor do I want to .
Crossover Games for Mac OS X – from what I know it’s a specialized version of crossover that is made for games. I know it works well with Diablo 2 and I hear it works well with other games too.
Install Diablo 2 and expansion using the same bottle - easy enough, just double click the .exe file in the folder and Crossover should take care of the rest!
That should hold us over until Blizzard comes out with the official fix! If anyone has problems/finds a simpler solution just comment with them!
After listening to the Back to the Future part of Cinemassacre Radio, I wanted to share a really awesome ‘rifftrax-like’ mp3 that was done with some of the regulars from the Opie and Anthony show. Just watch the first Back to the Future movie with this playing along on a computer to initiate insta-lols.
Found this from @thatgirlallie on twitter. It seems that women of the future will be wearing dresses of al-u-minium and men will have a jumpsuit that will have ‘candy for cuties.’ Shit, looks like they even had the future covered for perverts too.
Well, I just read on twitter that the Angry Video Game Nerd (AVGN, duh!) videos are back! Apparently there were contractual issues that had to be hammered out and that now everything is a go! Also, it seems that James Rolfe was on XM radio last week (O&A’s channel) talking about AVGN videos and other things (also that includes Back to the Future). You can check it out at cinemassacre.com
With the opening of “Watchmen” I went and picked up the novel. I not much of a comic buff but I’m really starting to like it. Not just that but I also started “Quicksilver” by Neil Stepenson. So far it started off slow and wordy but by page 90 it’s starting to pick up. Also on my read list: “Of Gods and Generals” and “The Last Man Standing.”
Other than that everything is going pretty well. The Mets start up soon along with all of baseball. My skills in SF4 are still improving and I might go and see the SF Giants in CA.
More later, and with that, I think I found the best license plate ever in NYC.
I just played the demo for Halo Wars and I have to say I’m not too impressed. With my lust for games like Age of Empires (all of them), StarCraft, WarCraft (2 & 3), Command and Conquer (most), Company of Heroes, and others it’s hard to put Halo Wars up with them.
I’m not saying it’s a terrible game, but one that an RTS fan wouldn’t enjoy for long. For what Ensemble did was a real first. A RTS game designed and made strictly for a console. Halo Wars isn’t a port from a PC but an original Xbox 360 game. The controller does work for the most part, though it does lack micromanagement features that a mouse and keyboard would give.
Base building is unique and clever but leaves you wanting more. For instance, you just basically have one GIANT building and all you do is add-ons. It includes factories, barracks, and even base defenses. You don’t have much of a choice for placement, just where the main building is, so much of the strategy is taken out.
You only have two choices of race: Humans or Covenant, though the humans are the only race for the campaign. Both armies work well and are fairly balanced. The units have different unique attacks from a warthog’s ramming attack to to the full out attack from a tank. The army sizes are relatively small and it’s hard to manage a small group. Mostly you’ll be ordering full-on attacks because managing small strike forces or conducting war on different fronts is almost impossible.
All in all, it was a cool play through and it does look like Ensemble tells a great story making Halo fans pretty happy. As far as an RTS game, it was a solid attempt but I feel that the short comings of consoles in this area ultimately bring this game down a few pegs. It just can’t compare to games that have been out for years on the PC. New RTS players and fans of Halo will enjoy this ride, but as a more seasoned vet, I think I’ll sit this war out.
